Officers with the Burgaw Police Department are investigating an assault that happened Sunday afternoon on Johnson Street. Officers with the Burgaw Police Department are investigating an assault that happened Sunday afternoon on Johnson Street.

BURGAW, NC (WECT) - Officers with the Burgaw Police Department are investigating an assault that happened Sunday afternoon on Johnson Street.

According to police, the crowd was confrontational and refused to obey orders when officers arrived to the scene. Police say the crowd became hostile and aggressive and threw rocks at officers who were making an arrest.

Officers called for backup from off-duty Burgaw Police Officers, Pender County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina Highway Patrol in Pender and New Hanover County, along with Wallace Police Department in attempt to regain control of the crowd.

According to authorities, baseball bats and a firearm were used in the assault. Police located and seized several items, but not firearm was found.

No names are being released as officers are continuing the investigation.
