The Dutch Fork wrestling program was suspended Friday after 17 students contracted various bacterial infections on their skin, a district spokesperson tells WIS.
Mark Bounds with Lexington-Richland District 5 said the school advised students and parents the team would not participate in a tournament this weekend and the program would be suspended until a cause could be determined.
Bounds said several wrestlers noticed "rashes" during the holiday break and sought treatment.
Doctors cleared the athletes to compete but it became a growing problem, Bounds said.
"There's nothing more important than the safety of our students," Bounds said.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control was notified and told the district it wasn't required to notify the general student body, Bounds said.
The school district is still investigating how and why the athletes contracted various skin infections.
