A YouTube video out of Pickens County appearing to show a waitress being fired by the owner of a Chinese restaurant was just a misunderstanding, according to a spokesperson for the restaurant.
The video shows a heated exchange between waitress Ashley Gravely, the owner of Chang An restaurant and a few customers, all over a tip.
"I was waiting on these ladies and they asked if I could take my tip and stick it in my pocket," Gravely said. "I told them I couldn't."
Gravely said she was hired on the basis that she couldn't make tips, but in exchange would make minimum wage.
She said once the ladies she was serving found that out, they wanted their tip money back-
"When (one of the women) found out I wasn't being given my tip money. She asked if I could give her money back and I gave her money back," Gravely said. "It was her choice. it was her money. She could do whatever she pleases. She wanted it back so I gave it back."
That's when the heated exchange went down, and while Gravely and the person who recorded the video claimed the owner fired Gravely on the spot, the owner said that's not the case--
"She wasn't fired," said Amy Chan, the daughter of Chang An's owner. Chan spoke on her mother's behalf due to a language barrier.
"My mother doesn't really speak English," Chan said. "She was trying to explain that to (the customers) that day."
As for the argument that's gone viral, Chan said her mom didn't understand what the ladies and Ashley were saying.
"I think my mom didn't really understand what was going on at that point," Chan said. "I saw the video too. I feel like my mom was the helpless one. She was trying to explain what happened. All the customers and even Ashley just kept talking and talking, and mom could not explain herself."
Gravely insists she was fired but Chan and her mom said that's not true.
"I know Ashley is mad at us," Chan said. "I tried to explain to her what happened, and I understand a lot is going on with her and she doesn't want to talk to me, but if she wanted to work for us again, she's welcome to. But if not, I wish her good luck with everything in the future sincerely."
Gravely said she had no plans of going back to work at the restaurant.
