MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - From North Myrtle Beach to Georgetown, there are plenty of places along the Grand Strand to eat. DHEC dropped in on three of these restaurants, one came close to a perfect score while two others were caught with some unexpected "guests" in their kitchens.
From southern food to seafood, Flounders Fish House has got your taste buds covered.
DHEC dropped into the restaurant and confirmed there's nothing fishy going on. Inspectors scored the North Myrtle Beach fish house a 97, with three minor violations, such as improper labeling of food.
The tag line, "The best place in town to flounder around," proven true by the "A" score on the restaurant door.
Shepard Broadfoot works at the liquor store across the street. He says he often talks to his customers about the food at Flounders.
"It's very flavorful, they've got an extensive menu, polite wait staff, good music, some throwback, and, but I think it would be well worth the visit," he says.
DHEC also dropped into China Wok in Myrtle Beach and cited the restaurant with two critical violations.
Inspectors noted shrimp was being thawed at the wrong temperature, which has the potential to make them harmful. That violation was corrected. DHEC's report also shows there were roaches in the kitchen.
The restaurant earned a score of 81, including eight minor violations. The manager at China Wok did not want to speak on camera but confirmed the restaurant's "B" rating.
Toni's Place in Georgetown was cited for several violations, but the two critical violations include a squirrel in the kitchen.
DHEC says a restaurant employee was seen cleaning "unapproved meat," in the kitchen on the prep table, and also washed it in the sink. The employee corrected this problem with inspectors on the scene.
DHEC will do follow up inspections at both restaurants that scored B grades.
