Deputies said they were called to a home they removed seven children from last week after a man tried to kill his mother, stabbing her in the stomach with a sword.
According to Spartanburg County deputies, they were called to the Gray Street home of Mark Winkler, 40, Tuesday afternoon where the victim said her son held a bayonet to her throat and stabbed her with the sword.
Winkler's 76-year-old mother Edna Winkler told deputies her son had been trying to get his wife's nerve pills but she hid them from him, but then on Tuesday he found them and took more than a dozen.
Winkler says after taking the pills her son's behavior became erratic and he started playing with a sword and a bayonet. Winkler says her son held the bayonet to her throat but didn't threaten her. Winkler says her son then accidentally stabbed her with the sword.
"He put it (sword) against my shirt and started to fall," Winkler said. "I reached out and I think I did it to myself."
Winkler showed Fox Carolina a two inch puncture in her stomach and a large bruise around it.
Winkler says she then called deputies because she was scared for her son's health.
"He's all in this world I got. He would never hurt me," Winkler said.
A Spartanburg County judge issued a warrant for Winkler's arrest, charging him with attempted murder. He is being held on a $20,000 bond, according to the jail's website.
But Winkler says the charges against her son should be dropped or at least lowered.
"He would never have murdered me. I just wanted to get him help," said Winkler.
Deputies say they believe Winkler is changing her story because she fears her retribution from her son, and say any change in Mark Winkler's charges would have to come from the solicitor.
Winkler, along with his wife, were arrested last week on seven counts each of child neglect after deputies said they found them living in a roach-infested home. The children were placed in Department of Social Services custody, and according to Lt. Tony Ivey with the sheriff's office, they were not at the home during Tuesday's assault.
