BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A political action committee called "Churches Against the County Wide Sale of Beer and Wine" has formed in Bladen County.
Reverend Bruce Cannon is leading the group in an attempt to remove a beer and wine sales referendum from the May ballot.
"My concern is with the sale of wine being so available, there's going to be a whole lot more alcohol use," said Reverend Cannon. "Not everybody who uses alcohol uses it responsible: if there is such a thing as responsible alcohol use."
Those in support of the beer and wine sales referendum say it will help bring new businesses and jobs to Bladen County.
"Jobs are something really hard to come by in this county at this point," said business owner Jeffrey Smith. He is in support of allowing beer and wine sales, across the county and disagrees with the political action committee.
"I think it's very hypocritical to deprive towns in this county revenue and jobs, based on their person beliefs. It's un-American," said Smith.
Churches Against the County Wide Sale of Beer and Wine will hold a meeting Tuesday night to discuss their grassroots campaign to stop beer and wine sales in Bladen County.
