BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A security malfunction at the Duke Energy Nuclear Plant has officials conducting a detailed investigation of the facility.

According to a spokesperson for Duke Energy, officials are trying to determine how a security barrier was activated on the property. The barrier is a security measure that extends from the ground, upward, to prevent unauthorized vehicle entry into secured areas.

The particular barrier that was activated is past a security checkpoint, on an access road leading into the facility.

There were no injuries reported, nor any damage caused to the facility. The security vehicle barrier will remain out of service until a full investigation can be completed.

Todd Beane of Duke Energy Progress explains that these types of security measures are in place to help prevent security breaches from reaching the plant. He also says that the public is not at risk because of the barrier being activated.

The plant will remain under normal operating conditions.
