LEXINGTON, KY (RNN) - After trailing early, the No. 14 Kentucky Wildcats defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 85-63 in the SEC opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Mississippi State (10-4, 0-1 SEC) led for most of the first half and held off an early Kentucky (11-3, 1-0) surge to lead 40-37 at halftime.

The Wildcats stormed back in the second half, taking over and leading by as many as 32 points.

Guard Craig Sword was the leading Bulldog scorer with 19 points. Guard James Young scored 26 for Kentucky.

Both teams shot poorly from downtown - MSU shot 27 percent from 3-point range and Kentucky shot just 20 percent. But the Bulldogs were dominant from the foul line, making 77.8 percent from the free throw line compared to the Wildcats' 63.6 percent.

A seasonably warm and humid summer air mass will govern the Cape Fear Region into the weekend. The approach of front and moisture and a glance from the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy will boost rain chances at times. A dose of marginally cooler air with lower rain chances is possible by the middle of next week.
