LELAND, NC (WECT) - Leland town council recently approved a budget amendment that appropriated $2 million from the general fund into a project fund for the town's new Cultural Arts Center.
They also approved a resolution awarding the construction contract to Monteith Construction for an amount not to exceed $1.7 million.
The actual bid amount for the project is $1,526,000 for the contract as recommended by the project architect, John Sawyer & Associates.
The additional money approved in the award of the contract is a contingency.
The construction bid amount is under the estimated cost of $1,737,000 that was provided by the project architect, who has worked diligently with the town and its Cultural Arts Committee to design a project that met the needs of the town and was within budget.
The reason for these actions today is to move forward with the project while town leaders are waiting on LGC approval for the financing of the project.
It was expected that they would be on the LGC agenda for their meeting on Tuesday, but all of the paperwork necessary for their approval was not provided before their agenda deadline.
It has since been moved to their February meeting.
In reality, LGC will likely approve in February and the town will finance the project over a 10-15 year period. Town Manager, David Hollis says they will pay the town back any of the funds expended in the interim out of the financed amount.
