LELAND, NC (WECT) - A Leland woman says the American flag was improperly disposed of at the McDonald's on Village Road in Leland. She says she went to McDonalds to find it closed and the United States flag, on the ground.

"I had a pit in my stomach. It was disgusting," said Alecia Davis Geddings.

As a daughter of a United States Army Solider, it upset her even more.

"I'm sure my daddy who served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd airborne, he would be rolling around in his grave," said Davis Geddings.

A local veteran's group took the flag to the Leland VFW to dispose of it properly.

"I was just sad that someone was not educated on how to properly dispose of the flag," said Davis Geddings.

McDonald's supervisors apologized for the incident. They said the flag got put on the ground during the chaos of construction by someone who is not McDonald's employee.

"The whole situation does not really show our heart," says McDonald's area supervisor David Anderson. "We have the flags because we love our country and we love our state...we are so deeply sorry."

They are using this opportunity to give flag etiquette classes to their stores in the area. They say they will be teaching every employee the importance of the United States Flag.
