First Alert Weather: Showers & mild Sunday, extremely cold weather next week
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Shower chances will increase late tonight into Sunday thanks to a coastal trough and an approaching Arctic cold front. Behind this front look for some of the coldest weather southeast North Carolina has seen in years! Record lows could fall Monday and Tuesday night.
SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY: Milder weather makes a brief return. Clouds will increase Saturday night with some showers possible late. Lows will be in the upper 30's and low 40's. The combination of a coastal trough and an approaching front will bring widespread showers to the forecast Sunday, especially after 10 AM. A few thunderstorms maybe possible as highs soar into the upper 60's. Winds shift to the southeast at 5-10 miles per hour. Showers should begin to taper off Sunday night with lows in the low 50's.
MONDAY: Ahead of the Arctic front highs Monday could approach 60 around midday. Then the bottom falls out! Northwest winds 15-20 mph will bring a blast of very cold air to the area temperatures will fall through the 50's during the afternoon. Overnight temperatures will plunge down to around 20 with wind chills in single digits!
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY: Bitterly cold! Tuesday will be the coldest day in at least three years. Look for a sunny and very cold day with highs below freezing. Tuesday night the wind dies down and record lows are likely with lows in the mid to upper teens (20 is the record low Wednesday morning at ILM). Wednesday will be slightly better with sunny skies and highs in the low 40's. Wednesday night lows modify back into the upper 20's as the Arctic airmass retreats.
THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY: A rapid warm up! Clouds will increase through the period along with the temperatures. Thursday will be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 50's. Friday and Saturday will feature mostly cloudy skies and highs in the 60's. Shower chances rise from 20% Friday to 40% Saturday. Lows moderate back into the 40's.
