Western Mass. snowstorm over, dangerous cold sets in

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The Springfield area woke up to about 6 to 8 inches of powdery snow on Friday morning. Meanwhile, the first nor'easter of the new year delivered more than two feet of snow to towns north of Boston.

The snow began before dawn on Thursday, with a few inches of accumulation throughout the day.  The snow intensified overnight, especially near the coast, as the low pressure center brushed by the coast. Bradley International Airport, where the Pioneer Valley's official records are kept, reported 9.1 inches of snow when it began tapering off around 7 a.m. Friday.

Snowfall totals have generally been around seven inches in the Springfield area, including downtown, Holyoke, Ludlow, and South Hadley.  Greenfield and Ashfield topped the list of reports this morning with 11 inches in Franklin County.  West Springfield rounded out to nine inches along with Bradley.  Chicopee, Southwick, and Westfield stayed at the six-inch mark, with Northampton and Amherst only managing five.

Dangerously cold air spreads out across New England behind this storm. Wind chills in the Springfield area were about 10 to 15 degrees below zero early Friday morning, and are expected to stay below zero throughout the day.

Record low temperatures are anticipated by Saturday morning, as overnight lows drop to 15 degrees below zero in Springfield. The record low for Saturday is -7 set at Bradley in 1981.

While many schools are canceled across western Massachusetts, parents are urged to keep children from playing in the snow for a long period of time due to the dangerous cold. The full list of delays and cancellations can be found here: Storm Closings

High temperatures will barely get to 20 degrees on Saturday, with another arctic outbreak across the Northeast potentially bringing another round sub-zero nights early next week.

The complete 7-day forecast can be found in the Weather section.

Updates from CBS3 Springfield will also be posted on Facebook and Twitter.
