SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Officers in the Southport area are receiving a new service for the new year.

The Southport Police Department is installing new computers in four of its patrol cars.

Officers will be able to use them to run background checks on potential suspects, track suspicious vehicles, and communicate better with other departments.

Police Chief, Jerry Dove says the new technology will allow his officers to work quicker and more efficiently.

"I've seen a lot of changes in my 47 years of being out here," said Dove. "The computers are just bringing us into a new age of technology. Only time will tell the benefit that is has for us."

Dove hopes to have all the computers installed by the end of January.
