BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County will offer free breakfast to all its elementary students starting Jan. 2.
The program, which was approved by the county board during their October meeting, provides the free breakfast regardless of household income.
Tina Ward, Brunswick County's Director of Child Nutrition, believes in the importance of breakfast and its connection to learning.
"We've all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we now have the data to back it up. Research indicates that students who eat breakfast everyday perform better in the classroom physically, mentally and socially," said Ward.
Current breakfast participation in Brunswick County elementary schools is 37 percent. Ward hopes the new program will increase that rate, citing that schools in North Carolina offering universal free breakfast have seen an average 25-30 percent increase.
"By making breakfast available free of charge to all elementary school students we are providing them with an additional tool to enhance the learning process. It's the right thing to do for the children," said Ward.
