SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - More than 2,500 people gathered in Surf City Wednesday to start 2014 off on a cold foot with the 12th annual Dolphin Dip Extravaganza.
It took just a few minutes for participants to dunk themselves into the chilly waters of Surf City and to run back to warm towels and coats.
Many people said this event is a chance to wash away 2013 and begin the new year with a fresh start.
According to the National Weather Service, the water temperatures were in the 50's. And while that sounds warm, participants say the water felt like pins and needles as they splashed into the surf.
The Dolphin Dip Extravaganza also featured a costume contest. Men, women and children donned the likes of Santa, dolphins, Father Time and Baby New Year. There were also a few Disney princesses and pirates.
