WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - In North Carolina, eight people have died from the flu.
Dr. Kamitsuka is the hospital epidemiologist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He is an expert on flu prevention and treatment.
According to Kamitsuka, the elderly, and young children are the most at risk of dying from the flu.
He says, underlying heart or lung issues combined with the flu can be a dangerous combination.
Kamitsuka says it is not too late to get the flu shot. The shot is the main source of prevention as it exposes the body to a form of the flu so the body can protect itself.
"By all of us getting the flu shot, we provide sort of a cocoon effect for those who are most vulnerable," says Kamitsuka, "that's why it's important we all get the shot."
