Bench clearing brawl mars Lowndes-Turner matchup

ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

What should have been a premier matchup at one of south Georgia's most competitive holiday basketball tournaments instead turned into an ugly scene Saturday night.

The game between the Lowndes and Turner County boys' teams at the Ronalda Pierce Holiday Hoop Fest was ruled a double forfeit after a bench clearing brawl broke out in the second quarter.

According to coaches and fans, a Lowndes player was fouled going for a layup. He got up and threw a punch at the Turner County player, which brought both teams to the court.

All players from both teams were ejected, resulting in a two-game suspension per GHSA rules.

Turner County head coach Tyrone Kellogg tells WALB he will stagger his team's suspensions over the next four games to avoid forfeits.

Lowndes head coach John Arnold says he hasn't decided how he will handle the suspensions, and will wait until he speaks with the GHSA.
