WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - One group helped kick-start Kwanzaa celebrations in the Port City Thursday evening.

A small collection of Wilmington residents gathered in the Burnett-Eaton Museum Foundation on Seventh Street.  They prayed together and lit the ceremonial first candle of the Kinara.

The community members also discussed the importance of love and the celebration of youth.

Dariq Speller was one of the leaders of the holiday ceremony.  He dedicated his ceremonial libations to Nelson Mandela this year.

"We wanted to give back to him and let the world know and let the people in this area know the importance of him and what he did," said Speller.

Speller said the organization will continue to celebrate the holiday in the coming nights at the museum foundation.
