BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officials are warning residents in Brunswick County of a new scam that is targeting people with debit cards, including child support custodial parents with smiONE debit cards.
According to reports, the scammers will send a text message to people with debit cards claiming there is something wrong with the account and asks the customer to respond by calling a phone number given in the text.
After you call the number, the person on the other end will ask for personal identifying information "for verification."
Reports say the text include smiONE abbreviations in the text message, but the company that provides the cards with Visa is not sending any text messages.
Be warned not to respond to a text message that looks like this and don't call the number in the message. Never provide personal financial information to someone who contacts you.
