Not everyone gets Christmas off

Longmeadow Fire Department veteran Capt. John Dearborn is working on Christmas, something he's certainly used to.

"Somebody's got to do it, and we drew it this year," said the 18-year fire department veteran.

Instead of being surrounded by family tonight, he's at the fire department with his shift.

They have their own Christmas dinner here.

But their job is making sure others at their homes tonight stay safe.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are the busiest days of the year for house fires.

"We certainly see an increase in fires, a lot of cooking related stuff, that's mostly what we see today," Dearborn said.

This isn't Dearborn's first Christmas night away from the family.

He spent five years with the service, and five Christmases away from loved ones.

"I was with the U.S. Coast Guard so I spent all the Christmases away while I was with the service, so I kind of got used to it," he said.

The people around town don't let him and the others go by unnoticed, they've been spending the past two days dropping off food and even gift certificates for the firefighters.

"It's nice, the townsfolk take good care of us," Dearborn said.
