WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – St. Paul's Lutheran Church in downtown Wilmington is giving those without a home not only the gift of a hot meal but some other gifts that will make their holiday extra special.
For the past several years, the church as provided the needy with dinner on Christmas day. The church's youth director, Emily Clamser, said they started giving out hot meals when kids at the church started asking where homeless people eat on Christmas.
"We found out that everyone feeds on Thanksgiving. But very few feed on Christmas. Everyone is normally with their families," she said.
In addition to the food, the church also provides each person with a blanket and a gift bag with some essentials that many of us take for granted.
"To see them smiles over a brand new t-shirt and a brand new pair of socks is sad but it also warms your heart because it means so much to them," Clamser said.
She said there are a lot of people that need some extra help this time of year and the old and young members of the church do what they can to help out not only around the holidays, but all year long.
