WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Shelters and adoption groups are telling people to stop adopting animals around the holidays.
They say people who adopt animals around the holidays give them as gifts to people who do not want animals, and then the animals end up back in the shelters.
According to Sandra Kenan at the Pets Mart Adoption Center, a pet is not something everyone wants or is ready for because it is a lifetime commitment.
She encourages people to adopt a pet for themselves, not for someone else. When a person gets an animal as a gift, the recipient may end up giving it back to the shelter.
"Don't adopt as a hasty decision because you didn't have a gift for somebody," Kenan says."Give them a gift card or cash. Don't put an animal through that transition because they don't deserve that."
