Metro Police deliver food, toys to needy

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro Police officers made a special connection with the community on Tuesday morning.

Officers and volunteers started their day giving gifts of food and toys to more than 230 needy Nashville families.

Those special families are selected by the officers who met them during the course of their work throughout the year.

Donations come from officers, civilians and the Nashville community.

Volunteers hope their gift strengthens the bond between police and the people they serve.

"A lot of people misunderstand the police department and why they do," said volunteer Randy Wright. "This was a good way for police to get into the neighborhood and do some really good things for people who are in desperate need of help that may be going unnoticed, and not be given the opportunity to get help."

Former Chief Joe Casey started this program more than 50 years ago in 1961.

"We try to give to people that don't have any other help," said Casey. "They're not getting any help from anybody else and they're very deserving and it's the police officers who come up with their name, they're out working in the streets everyday."

Why did Cracker Barrel fire Brad's wife? It's really no one's business, other than Brad's and his wife's, but that hasn't stopped people around the world from demanding answers after a Harrison County, IN, man publicly asked the restaurant chain why his wife Nanette was let go from her job at the Cracker Barrel in Corydon.
