The Wrightsville Beach Police Department is currently investigating a string of ten vehicle thefts over the last three weeks. That's above average for such a short period of time. However, Captain Paul Burdette says they usually see an up tick this time of year due to the increase in holiday shopping.

Burdette says there are a few easy tips to keep yourself and your valuables safe that surprisingly, many people aren't doing.

  1. Always lock your doors.
  2. Keep valuable items out of sight.
  3. Stay alert while out and about.

"By taking the steps personally, you can prevent yourself from being the victims. Ultimately, that's what we're looking for," said Burdette. "We don't want to see anyone victimized. We're here. However, you play the most important role in protecting yourself and your valuables."

When Christmas is over, shopping seems to die down a little bit but that doesn't mean you can let your guard down. New research from the National Insurance Crime Bureau shows that New Year's Day actually has the highest number of reported vehicle thefts out of any day of the year.
