BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Elizabethtown Police Department charged a man for felony insurance fraud after he filed a false report that his vehicle had been stolen.
According to the police department, Willie Horace Monroe, 62, reported he was driving down the street the day before Thanksgiving and someone was standing in the middle of the road.
Police say Monroe explained he thought he knew the person until he stopped in the road. According to officials, Monroe said two more people appeared, one of whom had a gun, and approached him when he stopped.
Monroe told police the group told him not to look at them and to get out of his vehicle. Police say Monroe reported they took $60 from him and left with the vehicle.
Officers learned there was a lien on the vehicle during the investigation.
According to police, Monroe had taken the vehicle to a location in an effort to hide it from repossession, but did not know it had already been repossessed by the lienholder prior to his report of it being stolen.
Police say Monroe filed a claim with his insurance, but officers worked with NC Dept of Insurance investigators on the false claim.
Investigators charged Monroe with the false report and false insurance claim.
