ATHENS, GA (RNN) – Georgia defeated Gardner-Webb in the battle of the bulldog mascots, winning 58-49 in Athens Thursday night.

The win is the fourth straight for the Georgia Dawgs (5-4) and pushes them over the .500 mark for the first time since their season opener, a 72-52 win against Wofford on Nov. 8.

After a slow start that didn't see either team score a point until 17:16 in the first, Gardner-Webb (6-7) fell behind quickly and trailed them throughout the game. GWU closed to within one point during a three-minute Georgia scoring drought in the first half, but that's as close as it would come.

Guard Juwan Parker was Georgia's leading scorer with 12 points and nine rebounds. Forward Marcus Thornton scored 11 points and had seven rebounds.

The Georgia Dawgs out-manned GWU on the glass, out-rebounding them 46-27, and had 32 defensive rebounds in the contest. Georgia was a disappointment from downtown, only completing three of their 10 3-point shots, and only went 18-of-47 from the floor.

The game had an 11:30 a.m. tipoff to welcome nearly 5,000 Athens-Clarke County school students, teachers and employees.

Georgia welcomes the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m.
