WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – City of Wilmington staff met with state and federal regulators Wednesday to discuss the possibility of a bridge that would provide a second access point to the Love Grove community.

Residents renewed efforts for a second entrance and exit after they were trapped in their neighborhood earlier this year because of a train derailment.

The only way in and out of the community is King St., off of North 11th St., which crosses a CSX rail line.

City council is considering building a bridge that would link Love Grove with One Tree Way, next to Screen Gems Studios off North 23rd St.

The project would cost at least $5 million and take more than two years to construct, Deputy City Manager Tony Caudle told council last month.

City staff met Wednesday with representatives from NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources, NC Wildlife Resources Commission, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding permitting, according to city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert.
