Wilmington fire captain in court

A Wilmington fire captain accused of helping a suspected murderer showed little emotion in court Thursday.

Captain Frank Gainey has been charged in connection with a fatal motorcycle accident.

He was arrested at the fire headquarters on Market Street Wednesday morning.   He is charged with accessory after the fact in a second degree murder.

The charge comes after a fatal accident on Carolina Beach Road in September.   Police say a truck turned in front of Ronald Gard who was heading south on his motorcycle near Legion Stadium.   Gard broadsided the truck.

Police arrested the driver of the pick-up truck, Charles Grier and charged him with driving while intoxicated.   Later they also charged him with second degree murder.

Gainey's arrest warrant says he helped Grier by removing evidence, but no one involved in the investigation will reveal what Gainey took.

Thursday in court, Gainey told a judge he intends to hire his own attorney before his next court appearance in November.

Gainey has been a firefighter for 17 years and is a captain at station 7 on College Road.
