WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – An effort to place wreaths on the graves at Wilmington National Cemetery doubled in size this weekend.
Volunteers with "Wreaths Across America" placed more than 1,200 wreaths Saturday morning to honor those who served our country.
This is the sixth year of the event, which is held in numerous cities across the United States.
Organizers said this year's success would not have been possible with help from the community.
"The community organizations took charge and used them as fundraisers to recognize the importance of the cemetery and the importance of the military," said Jerry West, with Cape Fear Civil Air Patrol.
Donations for next year's event will be accepted starting in January. The goal is to place more than 5,000 wreaths.
