Dozens donate to Weller's Wheels

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens of local children will wake up Christmas morning to a brand new bicycle, thanks to a caring community.

A steady stream of people turned out to the Walmart at Monkey Junction in Wilmington Thursday to donate to Weller's Wheels.

Travis Hitchcock, General Manager of Waste Industries purchased several bikes as a donation from the company.

"Waste Industries has served this area for over 40 years and we wanted to give back to the community that has treated us so well," Hitchcock said.

One couple came in to buy bikes, not knowing how many they wanted. They ended up donating five.

"My wife and I will just look and see which ones we like," Kenny Leary said. "We don't have a number."

1-800-Got Junk also donated to the cause by purchasing bikes and delivering those collected Thursday night to WECT.

The bikes and toys collected for the WECT Holiday Smiles Toy Drive will be picked up by the Salvation Army this weekend.

The bikes and toys will be distributed to the families that applied for assistance back in October. They will receive the donated items just in time for Christmas.

The deadline to donate to WECT's Holiday Smiles Toy Drive and Weller's Wheels is Saturday, December 14.
