BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The superintendent of schools in Brunswick County will now decide if the book "The Color Purple" stays on the curriculum.

Dr. Edward Pruden received an appeal from County Commissioner, Pat Sykes.

She filed a formal challenge against having students at West Brunswick High School read Alice Walker's book.

Sykes said some language and sexual content are inappropriate.

A school committee denied her challenge and now Sykes has taken it to Pruden for his ruling.

"We would take concerns seriously under any circumstances," said Pruden. "But certainly, when people come to you with something that is coming from their set of values or religious beliefs, that is something you have to consider very carefully."

Pruden said he plans to make a decision by next week.

If he upholds the committee's ruling, Sykes can appeal that decision once again to the school board.
