NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A string of break-ins on both sides of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge has law enforcement reminding you how to protect your home this holiday season.
The Chief of Police in Boiling Spring Lakes said the town is averaging a break-in per day. In New Hanover County, sheriff's deputies arrested a teenage couple believed to be the cause of several break-ins and stolen vehicles.
"We do see an influx in breaking and entering during the holidays," said Sgt. J.J. Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
Brewer suggests keeping the shrubs around your home trimmed, so they don't block any windows. Holiday lights are helpful, because they keep your house well lit.
When you're not around the house, Brewer said your neighbors are your best line of defense. A patrol unit is just a phone call away, according to Brewer.
"It's your tax dollars here to patrol the area, to be in the neighborhood," he said. "And that's what we're doing."
When you're out of town, possibly traveling for the holidays, Brewer said you can request a special patrol.
It can be scheduled by phone or online, according to Brewer. He said deputies will check your doors, locks, windows and general nature of your home twice a day.
"Every call is important to us," said Brewer.
All law enforcement agencies are different, so check with yours to learn about special patrol requests.
