BURGAW, NC (WECT) – New Mayor Eugene Mulligan has barely had the time to settle in to his new role as Mayor of Burgaw, before he will face his first controversial issue, his residency.
A petition was presented by attorney Kent Harrell calling Mulligan's residency status with the town limits into question.
The petition reads,
We, the undersigned citizens and registered voters in the Town of Burgaw request the Town Council investigate the qualifications of Eugene Mulligan to hold elected office in this municipality based on his residency status within the town limits.
Burgaw Commissioner Wilfred L. Robbins confirms that the Council is aware of the petition, and says the council will hear more about the issue in January.
Mulligan was sworn in as scheduled as the Mayor of Burgaw, and will have until January to provide the board with more information about his legal residency within the town limits of Burgaw.
