WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The UNCW Board of Trustees has approved Phase one of an outdoor enhancement project aimed at upgrading the outdoor athletic facilities.

Improvements that have been approved include renovations to the intramural fields and installation of an artificial surface, building restroom facilities that would be available to the intramural, softball and soccer fields and the addition of a baseball practice area behind the right field wall of Brooks Field.

Phase one could be the beginning of a major renovation on campus.

"We want to in some way build a new baseball stadium, either renovate what's in place or move to a new location which is an alternative." UNCW Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass said.

Improvements to Brooks field that have already been approved include adding padding on the outfield wall, replacing chain-link fence in the foul area with brick, and upgrades to the home plate and batters area.

"We also need a new basketball operations facility which would basically be an office complex for both the men's and women's basketball program." Bass said. "We want to enhance our tennis facility. We'd like to create a tennis stadium with stadium seating and create a field house situations for both of those tennis programs."

The wish list also includes a field house structure to serve all outdoor athletic programs which would be home to a human performance lab bridging the gap between athletics and academics.

According to Bass the entire project could come with a price tag of 30 to 40 million dollars.

"Those are the options we're considering. We have the ability to create and work with public-private partnerships because of how the state of North Carolina has zoned the land. We're not going to leave any stone unturned as we try to find partners to deliver facilities for the University and the community."
