WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – If you're planning to mail a gift this holiday season, the U.S. Postal Service is offering tips for protecting your packages:
-Don't mail cash. Send a check or money order instead.
-If you're sending something valuable, you might want to pay a little more for tracking or signature confirmation.
-Michael Carroll, postal inspector team leader, said not to leave items in your mailbox or on your porch overnight.
"The opportunist thief is not going to want to go out in the middle of the day to steal somebody's property," he said. "They're going to go overnight when they think they're not going to get seen."
Rather than leaving packages or envelopes out overnight, Carroll said to have a trusted friend or neighbor pick it up for you. And if you're going to be away for several day, ask the post office to hold your mail.
