Churches close, events shuffled as winter weather arrives

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Churches are canceling services across Central Virginia and events are being shuffled as a winter storm brings a mix of sleet, snow, ice and freezing rain to the area.

Dozens of churches canceled some or all of their services from Amelia to Ashland and  beyond.

Organizers postponed the Hopewell Holiday Parade Sunday to next week, while the annual Mechanicsville Rotary-Ruritan Christmas Parade in Hanover is now canceled.

The storm is expected to bring freezing rain, ice, snow and sleet to much of the area. Precipitation began before sunrise Sunday, with areas to the west getting the more severe weather.

The storm could create massive power outages in parts of Hanover and areas from Goochland and to the west. Power crews began gearing up for the storm early, in preparation for up to an inch of sleet and freezing rain west of Richmond.

State and local authorities have extra crews on hand to prepare for icy conditions on the roads. Officials warned drivers to stay off the roads, if possible, as the storm makes its way through the area throughout the daylight hours Sunday.
