A tender embrace as father and daughter see each other for first time in almost a year.
(CLARKTON, NC) WECT – Major Bill McKernan spent the last year serving the United States Army in Afghanistan. He surprised his twelve-year-old daughter Caroline by showing up to her classroom on Friday afternoon at Clarkton School of Discovery.
Major McKernan was able to speak to his wife and five children every so often, but he had not seen them in eleven months. When he began to make preparations to come home, Major McKernan got in contact with his daughter's seventh grade teacher. Tiffany Gooden and Major McKernan made arrangements for him to surprise Caroline in class.
When the seventh grade class entered the media room, they had been told their teacher had won teacher of the month so that Caroline would not be tipped off by the cameras. They began to take turns acting out different professions. Caroline acted out the word "soldier."
As soon as she finished acting it out, her very own soldier appeared right before her eyes.
"I am still in shock. I feel like this is a dream," said twelve-year-old Caroline, "I am just glad he will be with me during the holidays."
This is Major McKernan's last deployment. He won't have to leave his family ever again.
