WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The North Carolina Board of Transportation has approved the designation of Airlie Road as the state's newest Scenic Byway, according to a news release from NCDOT.

Officials say the 1.5 mile stretch of road was selected for the designation due to its natural beauty and historical features.

Airlie Road runs from Wrightsville Ave. and parallels the Intracoastal Waterway before terminating at U.S. 74/76 west of the Heide-Trask Drawbridge.

According to the news release, the City of Wilmington nominated the route for a Scenic Byway designation, and as a part of the new designation, this section of Airlie Road will be marked by official NCDOT Scenic Byway signs and included in NCDOT's nationally-distributed Scenic Byways Guide.
