WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – It's a Craigslist seller's worst nightmare; meeting a complete stranger to sell them their things, only to have the transaction take a turn for the worse.
Wilmington Police charged a high school student Wednesday after he stole an iPhone 5 from one, and attempted to steal a Playstation 4 from another Craigslist seller.
Israel Javar McClound-Williamson has been charged with larceny of a person, attempted larceny from a person, and possession of stolen goods.
The victims told police they had their items up for sale on the popular resale site, and arranged a face-to-face meeting with a potential buyer, Williamson. Once they met with the teen, he grabbed the cell phone, and took of running. Williamson was arrested Tuesday with the iPhone 5 still in his possession.
Wilmington Police recommend that individuals who use online sites to sell items should exercise great caution when arranging face-to-face meetings.
Always select a public place and never go alone. Make sure to write down the make, model and description of any vehicles and ask for valid ID before showing merchandise.
