NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – School leaders in New Hanover County passed a resolution Tuesday in support of teachers, by opposing a new state law.
Chairman Don Hayes said the Board of Education approved a resolution asking state lawmakers to repeal legislation that requires school boards to offer four-year contracts and raises to the top 25 percent of teachers.
At a previous work session, administrators told the school board that the selection process would hurt collaboration and cooperation among teachers.
"All we can do is show our support for our local teachers," said Hayes.
But the support will not stop the selection process. Hayes said school administrators will continue with teacher reviews, because it's what is required by law.
"We will obey the law in whatever we do," he said.
