COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A Chadbourn Police Officer has his job back after being fired for posting questionable videos to the social media site Vine.
The Chadbourn Town Council voted 3-1 in reinstate the Brian Campbell. Campbell was fired in November for, what was deemed at the time, posting inappropriate videos to Vine.
According to Council member Rashard Roberts he was the only one to vote against reinstating Campbell. He says he believes it sends the message that town officials condone the behavior and there are standards with certain positions. Rashard Roberts tells us, since some of the videos can be seen as racially offensive every time Campbell stops a car driven by someone black that could become an issue for the town.
It turns out some of the council members who voted to rehire Campbell agree. One of them says, it came down to Campbell's 18 years of law enforcement experience. He said it was the toughest decision he's had to make on council.
"My reason for deciding to let Mr. Campbell stay is because I don't know who we would get to replace Mr. Campbell. If there's someone new out the academy or someone with a couple years experience. Now they've got to learn Chadbourn. They have to learn where the crime is at," said Edwin Roberts, a Chadbourn council member.
Edwin Roberts said the town will now be putting protocol into place to make sure incidents like this don't happen again.
