Haynes is Wilmington's new Mayor Pro-tem, others sworn in for new terms

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington City Council elected a new Mayor Pro-tem during a meeting Tuesday night. Council member Margaret Haynes received support from the other members for the position, and will preside over meetings when the Mayor is absent.

Haynes will replace Earl Sheridan, who served as Mayor Pro-tem for a year. Sheridan was one of three council members taking the oath of office to serve new four-year terms. Sheridan, Charlie Rivenbark and Kevin O'Grady all won re-election races during the November Municipal elections.

Mayor Bill Saffo was also sworn-in after winning re-election to another two-year term, his fourth as the political leader of the city.

    The state Senate voted Monday night by a 33-15 margin to override Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of a bill to combine the state ethics commission and elections board. The state House is scheduled to vote on the override when it reconvenes Tuesday morning.
