WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Internet scams are at an all time high during the holiday season. There are several cyber security tips to be aware of when shopping online.
There are many ways hackers can get a hold of your information.
Make sure you have a different password for each website you are shopping on.
Be careful to click on anything that looks like the purchase button because it could be spam.
UNCW technology information team lead Chelsea Deaner says, "think before you click. Make sure you know the website you're putting your information on is encrypted and make sure it is secure."
Look for the "S" in the "http" URL link. The "s" means it is a secure and safe site because it has been encrypted.
If you get strange emails, phone calls or text messages, this could be a sign your information's been hacked. If you think you have been hacked, make sure to put a freeze on all of your accounts and change your passwords as soon as possible because hackers work quickly.
