Your Week in Pop Culture: Let's give thanks for what amuses us

Pop culture is like a cornucopia - it's full of things a lot of people like to talk about, but don't really care for. Pop culture is like a cornucopia - it's full of things a lot of people like to talk about, but don't really care for.

(RNN) – Ah, yes, Thanksgiving.

Throw those diets out of the window, y'all, your mom's sweet potato pies and pound cakes are about to ruin them.

This week, we will give thanks for what pop culture gives us: things to mock, make us laugh and shake our heads off. It will also be done in the same vane as Jimmy Fallon does thank you notes on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

TV: Thank you ‘Family Guy,' for killing off your best character, losing fans

This Sunday on Family Guy, their desperate attempt to get viewers met its climax when popular character and Griffin family dog Brian was hit by a car and died.

The remaining fans of the show has clamored to the petition website, pleading to show creator Seth MacFarlane to bring Brian back. The petition has more than 97,000 signatures so far.

"Brian Griffin was an important part of our viewing experience," part of the petition says. "The writers of Family Guy didn't just kill off on of their creations, they killed off the dog who has lived in our homes for the last 15 years. The killed the dog we all have come to love. They killed America's dog!"

The message from a diehard fan could be too soon. Words of conspiracy have, of course, already hit the internet, saying Brian will be back for Christmas. Others say the desperation move was in part to deflect the summer announcement of The Simpsons killing off a character in their 26th season.

No one knows for sure, it's certain that killing off Brian won't get the ratings boost they desire – even if he does come back.

MOVIES: Thank you, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,' for making every other movie not relevant

Thanks to the second part of The Hunger Games trilogy making a huge opening-weekend showing, there really isn't much to talk about as the holiday movie season is officially underway.

Here's last weekend's Top 5, according to Box Office Mojo (listed next to previous week's ranking and weekend gross):

  1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (NR) $158,074,286
  2. Thor: The Dark World (1)$14,196,302
  3. The Best Man Holiday (2) $12,490,920
  4. Delivery Man (NR) $7,944,977
  5. Free Birds (4) $5,363,208

In theaters: Nov. 27–29

Frozen - Opening Wednesday, the latest Disney animation feature features a little sisterly rivalry, a talking snowman and a moose. Sounds like Thanksgiving at my house. Voices include Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff.

Homefront - The action film stars Jason Stayham as a former DEA agent and James Franco as a meth dealer of a small town named Gator. This could either be really good or really bad. I would rather see Franco selling moonshine or making fun of the latest Kanye West video with Seth Rogen. Rotten Tomates gives the film a 32 percent on its "tomatometer," there's that. The movie also stars Kate Bosworth and Winona Ryder

Black Nativity – A musical screenplay adaptation of the play written by Langston Hughes, a Baltimore teen (Jacob Latimore) is taken from poverty to spend the holidays with his church going grandparents, and finds himself in the middle of a spiritual awakening. The film stars Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese Gibson, Nas and Mary J. Blige.

Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom – There has been quite a few films made to honor the life of former South African president and freedom fighter Nelson Mandela. In this effort, Idris Elba is cast to play Mandela through his inauguration as the first democratically-elected president of South Africa. The film also stars Naomie Harris (Skyfall).

Also in theaters: Oldboy, Bullett Raja, The Punk Singer, Reaching for the Moon.

SPORTS: Eat, sleep watch sports

Guys - want to find out when you should probably head to that neighborhood bar to escape your in-laws? Ladies - want to find out when you want to schedule your turkey carving?

Have no fear, we've got your Thanksgiving weekend sports scheduler here. Here are the NFL highlights:

  • Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions 12:30 p.m. on FOX
  • Oakland Raiders at Dallas Cowboys 4:30 p.m. on CBS
  • Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens 8:30 p.m. on NBC

MUSIC: Thank you, music, for your timelessness

Thank You, Alanis Morissette, for giving the world the ultimate song giving thanks for random and heartfelt things.

Jam of the Week: Want something a little more current? Fine, give thanks to Busta Rhymes being back in Thank You featuring Q-Tip, Kanye West and Lil' Wayne.

Well, maybe not so much for Lil' Wayne… but you're welcome for an edited version.

A little something from YouTube: Best version of ‘Wrecking Ball' ever

Finally, let's give thanks that no matter what Miley Cyrus does, there will be people on the internet that will do it better – even in a mocking way.

Enter YouTube user Steve Kardynal, who took to the social media site Chatroulette and amused people everywhere with his raunchy version of Cyrus's hit Wrecking Ball. The video had received more than 19 million hits on YouTube.

The looks on the fellow users on the website are as priceless as Kardynal's rendition.

Happy Thanksgiving, I hope you didn't watch this before dinner.
