Holiday off to tragic start for Varina crash victim's family

A grandmother of five is dead after her car collided with a tractor trailer Wednesday afternoon in Varina.

According to Henrico police, the victim's 2002 Ford Mustang and a tractor trailer collided at 2:19 p.m. on Route 5 (New Market Road) at Doran Road. The incident shut down part of Route 5 for nearly four hours.

Just a few dozen feet from the crash scene is Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. Members there told NBC12 that the victim worked at the church daycare for 12 years.

"It's just sad," said Brad Enroughty, who attends Four Mile Creek and whose home sits next to the crash site. "She has children and grandchildren."

Enroughty knows what that pain feels like. His aunt was killed at that very spot in 2001.

"She pulled out to go West on Route 5 in front of a tractor trailer and it T-boned her," he said.

Henrico police won't say if they plan to press charges as this investigation is still on-going. The victim's family is still being notified so police aren't releasing her name at this time.

The crash remains under investigation.
