First Alert Weather: significant storm system likely Tuesday into Wednesday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - As a strong low pressure system tracks from the Gulf of Mexico toward the Northeast U.S. Tuesday into Wednesday, wet and stormy weather is likely for southeastern North Carolina in that time.

LATE MONDAY NIGHT: Expect increasing and thickening clouds. Temperatures will rise from the 30s to the 40s and 50s late. Shower chances: 0% for most of the night trending to near 20% around sunrise.

TUESDAY: Expect widespread showers (some heavy). South winds, occasionally gusting more than 30mph, will deliver warm highs in the 60s to even locally 70s and also create the possibility for locally strong or severe, gusty thunderstorms later in the day.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Showers will remain likely and locally strong or severe thunderstorms will remain possible. Main threats with any such storms: damaging winds, tornadoes. Temperatures will hover mainly in the 60s amid variable and gusty winds. 

WEDNESDAY: Showers and thunderstorms will gradually exit. Two-day storm total rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected with locally higher amounts possible. Temperatures will remain steady in, and then fall back through, the 60s. 

THANKSGIVING DAY: Happy Thanksgiving! Expect drier and chillier conditions to return with morning low temperatures around 30 and afternoon high temperatures likely in the 40s.  Skies: sunny or partly sunny. 

REMAINDER OF THANKSGIVING WEEKEND: Expect daily highs mainly in the 50s. Friday will have rain chances near 0% with partly sunny skies. Saturday and Sunday will likely have variable clouds and 10% rain chances. 

TROPICS: No tropical storms or hurricanes are expected to develop in the Atlantic Basin for the rest of this week.  The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
