Harding to face Texas A&M-Commerce in Live United Texarkana Bowl

Posted: Updated:
TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) -

The Harding University Bison will go head to head with the Texas A&M Commerce Lions in the first-ever Live United Texarkana Bowl in December.

Bowl chairman Allen Brown revealed the matchup Wednesday, pitting the Bisons out of the Great American Conference against the Lions out of the Lone Star Conference.

The Bisons ended the regular season with an 8-2 record. They turned in back-to-back eight-win seasons for the first time in program history. They finished ranked third in the country in rushing yards per game at 366.0. When they do throw the ball, the Bisons' 22.72 yards per pass completion leads Division II.

Texas A&M-Commerce went through a major turnaround by posting a 7-4 record. In the previous three years, the Lions had just five victories. Under first-year head coach, Colby Carthel, the Lions beat a pair of ranked teams as well as a Division I opponent. Their scoring average of 37.9 points per game currently ranks as the highest point per game average in program history.

The Bisons and Lions have met three times between 1995 and 2001. Texas A&M-Commerce owns a 3-0 record on those contests. Both teams faced Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla., during the regular season. Harding scored a 42-10 victory while Texas A&M-Commerce survived a late rally to claim a 31-29 win.

The game will be played at Razorback Stadium in Texarkana, Arkansas. Kickoff is at noon. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. All proceeds from the event stay in the community, and benefit the United Way of Greater Texarkana.

There are only 2 bowl games at the Division II level in the United States. The Live United Texarkana Bowl will be the third.

A community pep rally is planned for Friday, December 6 at Crossroads Business Park in Texarkana, AR.
