Police helicopter pinpoints thieves

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Sheriff's deputies were able to arrest two people on the run, thanks to their eye in the sky.


Authorities say Daniel Lee Johnson and Brent Wayne McGhee, both 32, were found with buckets and a wheel barrow full of cut copper ground cable. The men were found in the woods running from deputies.

The helicopter, known as SABLE, was called in to assist New Hanover County sheriff's deputies arrest the two men suspected of stealing copper wire from the Duke Energy power station located off Blue Clay Road.

Deputies arrived at the power station around 1:30 a.m. Friday, and heard what sounded like people running through the woods. SABLE was able to pinpoint the suspects using FLIR technology to guide the deputies to their location.

Both Johnson and McGhee were charged with felony larceny, first degree trespass, and damage to real property.
