A Live 5 News investigation found that a former pastor convicted of rape last week has a brother in prison serving a life sentence for kidnapping, raping and murdering a woman 35 years ago.
Fifty six year old Gene Ray Richardson is serving his sentence at Lieber Prison.
Richardson's brother, 49 year old Dale Richardson, a former pastor, was sentenced last week to 20 years in prison for kidnapping and raping three women.
Our investigation revealed Gene Richardson was arrested in May of 1978, accused of killing interior decorator Phyllis Buchanan of Hanahan.
An investigator told me Richardson was a customer at the store where Buchanan worked.
He said Gene Richardson called Buchanan and asked her to meet him at a home under construction in the Archdale subdivision.
Richardson was a painter, and told her he wanted some ideas for the home.
When she failed to return home, one of her daughters called police.
A few days after her disappearance, authorities got a tip and they found Buchanan's body at the end of Tuskegee Drive, a few miles away from the Archdale subdivision.
She had been stabbed three times in the back.
Investigators quickly identified Gene Richardson as their suspect.
He was arrested on May 31, 1978.
Daisy Wright lives down the street from where Buchanan's body was found.
She remembers meeting the Richardson family.
"We were surprised to know that was him because they were quiet people, lived over there in Stratton Capers," Wright said.
Last Wednesday, Gene Richardson was denied parole for murdering Buchanan.
Ironically, it was on the same day Dale Richardson was sentenced.
