Donations being collected for sheriff's detective shot by suspect

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Donations are being collected for the New Hanover County Sheriff's Detective that was reportedly shot by Brandon Smith.

According to the Sheriff's office, Detective Michael Spencer was trying to approach Smith to talk to him when Smith started firing.

Detective Spencer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Organizers collecting donations say the bullet hit Spencer's upper thigh, closely missing his femoral artery but causing a catastrophic injury by shattering his femur.

Donation organizers say this has created a financial hardship for the family, and are asking for people to donate money. They say Detective Spencer does not know if or when he will return to full duty.
